Where it came from
Snakeform was released in 2015 as part of the Plunder the Graves deck for the Magic: The Gathering Commander product line. This set was designed to cater to the popular multiplayer Commander format, emphasizing unique deck-building strategies and cards that offer utility in long-form, casual social play. Mechanically, the card acts as a transformation spell, a design space Wizards of the Coast frequently utilizes to neutralize powerful enemy creatures while simultaneously providing the caster with card draw.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who has contributed to numerous sets within the game’s modern era. His depiction of the Snakeform transformation focuses on the surreal, visceral transition of a creature into a 1/1 green Snake. Within the broader context of the set, the card was received as a solid, functional tool for green-based control strategies, prized by players for its ability to strip opponents of dangerous keywords while maintaining hand parity.
