Provenance

Where it came from

Snap was released in February 1999 as part of the Urza's Legacy expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was pushing the boundaries of mechanical complexity, the card was designed to allow players to return a creature to its owner's hand for a single blue mana, while simultaneously untapping two lands. This effect provided a significant tempo advantage, effectively making the spell cost nothing when cast.

The artwork for this card was created by fantasy illustrator Rebecca Guay, whose distinctive, painterly style became a hallmark of late 1990s Magic sets. Her work on Snap captured a sense of fluid, ethereal motion that complemented the spell's mechanical function of displacing a creature. Upon its release, the card quickly became a staple in competitive formats, eventually becoming notorious for its role in enabling highly efficient combo decks that dominated the tournament landscape of the era.
