Where it came from
Snapdax, Apex of the Hunt was originally released as part of the Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set in 2020. This specific iteration is from the Year of the Tiger 2022 Secret Lair drop, a limited-release product produced by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The card was reimagined with thematic artwork by artist Fiona Hsieh, who utilized a bold, illustrative style to depict the creature as a stylized tiger, aligning with the cultural celebration of the zodiac sign.
The design of this variant was intended to bridge the gap between the established mechanics of the Mutate keyword and the aesthetic traditions of East Asian ink-wash and contemporary digital art. By replacing the original grotesque mutation visuals with the regal imagery of the tiger, the designers aimed to provide a high-concept collectible that resonated with the celebratory nature of the 2022 product release. It was received positively by the community as a striking example of Secret Lair's ability to recontextualize existing game pieces through artistic collaboration.
