Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance

Sokenzan, Crucible of Defiance was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. The card depicts a legendary mountain on the plane of Kamigawa, specifically representing the Sokenzan range, which serves as a spiritual and tactical hub for the plane's Akki and Ogre factions. Mechanically, the card functions as a legendary land that provides red mana while offering a channel ability, reflecting the volatile, fiery essence of the mountain in the set's high-tech, cybernetic reimagining of the classic Japanese-inspired setting.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Raoul Vitale, who captured the rugged, imposing nature of the mountain peaks. The design intent was to bridge the gap between the original Kamigawa block's feudal themes and the new futuristic aesthetic of the Neon Dynasty era. As a utility land with flexible activation costs, it was well-received by competitive players for its versatility and was a staple in many red-based strategies across multiple formats upon its introduction.
