Provenance

Where it came from

Sokenzan first appeared in the Champions of Kamigawa expansion in 2004, designed to represent the jagged, mountainous home of the Akki goblins and the ogre warlords within the Japanese-inspired plane of Kamigawa. This specific printing was released as part of the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a collection that brought together various oversized planar cards from the game's history to allow players to travel between different dimensions during gameplay.

The artwork for this card was created by Brian Snõddy, a long-time illustrator for the series known for his distinct, high-contrast style. Snõddy intended to capture the harsh, volcanic terrain of the Sokenzan range, emphasizing the rugged peaks and the volcanic fires that define the region's harsh landscape. Upon its release, the card was well-received by fans of the game's lore for its atmospheric depiction of one of the most iconic mountain ranges in the multiverse.
