Soldevi Excavations

Soldevi Excavations was first released in the 1996 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Alliances. Developed during a period when the game was rapidly expanding its mechanical complexity, the card represents the Soldevi civilization, a faction of artificers located on the plane of Dominaria. The design reflects the set's broader theme of icy, post-apocalyptic survival, where resources were scarce and players were encouraged to trade card advantage for strategic land utility.

The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a prominent fantasy artist known for his detailed, atmospheric style. Giancola’s vision for the piece captures the subterranean and industrial nature of the Soldevi, emphasizing the lore of the excavation sites where ancient technology was recovered. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile utility land, notable for its ability to provide mana while simultaneously filtering the top of a player's library, a mechanic that has remained relevant in various eternal formats over the decades.
