Soldevi Heretic

Soldevi Heretic was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card belongs to a cycle of cards depicting the Soldevi, a faction of artificers located in the frozen continent of Terisiare, whose lore centers on their reliance on artifacts recovered from the ruins of the Brothers' War. This card specifically highlights the theological conflict within the sect, as the Heretic rejects the orthodox preservation of ancient technology in favor of dismantling or destroying it.

The artwork for this card was provided by illustrator Melissa A. Benson, a prominent artist during the early years of the game. Her work on the piece captures the stark, monochromatic aesthetic prevalent in the Alliances set, utilizing a gritty, dark style that emphasizes the character's focused, almost fanatical nature. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche utility tool, noted by players for its specialized ability to tap and gain life by discarding artifacts, reflecting the set's broader mechanical focus on synergy with non-creature cards.
