Soldevi Steam Beast

The Soldevi Steam Beast was released as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1996. Set on the frigid continent of Ice Age, the card reflects the aesthetic of the Soldevi engineers, a faction known for their desperate attempts to harness ancient technology to survive the perpetual winter. The design intent was to capture a sense of steampunk-inspired ingenuity repurposed for a hostile, low-resource environment, fitting the overarching narrative of a civilization clinging to the remnants of a more advanced past.

The artwork for this card was rendered by artist Tom Wänerstrand, who contributed several pieces to the mid-90s era of the game. His illustration focuses on the mechanical brutality of the creature, utilizing a gritty, dark style that became a hallmark of the Alliances set. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, if somewhat niche, mid-range creature, and it remains a nostalgic touchstone for players who collected during the mid-90s expansion boom.
