Provenance

Where it came from

Foresight was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, Alliances followed the narrative arc of the Ice Age block, focusing on a world struggling to recover from a centuries-long magical winter. The set is notable for its thematic focus on the shifting political allegiances between the survivors of this frigid era, with card designs intended to reflect themes of strategy, sacrifice, and long-term planning.

The artwork for Foresight was created by illustrator Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists who helped define the early aesthetic of the game. Maddocks utilized a distinct, surreal style to represent the card's function, which allows a player to look at the top cards of their library. By visualizing the act of peering into the future through an abstract and somewhat eerie lens, the design reinforced the blue mana color identity of the set, which emphasizes mental manipulation and foresight.
