Where it came from
The SOLDIER Military Program card, numbered 25 in the Final Fantasy Commander set, serves as a thematic cornerstone of the tabletop experience. It was developed to represent the elite, Mako-enhanced infantry units central to the narrative of Final Fantasy VII, drawing directly from the iconic imagery of the Shinra Electric Power Company’s private security force. The design emphasizes the clinical and authoritarian nature of the organization, utilizing the sharp, utilitarian aesthetic that defined the game’s corporate antagonist.
The illustration work for this card was commissioned to mirror the character designs established by Tetsuya Nomura, focusing on the stark contrast between the SOLDIER operatives' stoic personas and their advanced technological equipment. Upon its release within the expansion, the card was well-received by players for its mechanical synergy with aggressive deck strategies, as well as its ability to evoke the specific atmosphere of the game’s setting through its minimalist, high-contrast visual style.
