Soldier of Fortune

Soldier of Fortune was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third expansion in the Ice Age block, Alliances was designed to shift the game’s meta by introducing powerful, high-impact cards that could swing the momentum of a match rapidly. The set was famously developed during a period of transition for Wizards of the Coast, reflecting a desire to refine game mechanics and provide more aggressive options for deck construction.

The card’s artwork was illustrated by Anson Maddocks, one of the original artists involved in the game’s earliest sets. Maddocks utilized his signature style to depict the soldier with a gritty, weathered aesthetic that fit the harsh, wintry themes of the Alliances world. While the card is often remembered by players for its unconventional effect—allowing a player to force an opponent to shuffle their library—it serves as a classic example of the experimental mechanical design that defined the mid-90s era of the game.
