Provenance

Where it came from

The Soltari Monk was originally printed in the 1997 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Tempest, designed by Mike Elliott, Richard Garfield, and Charlie Catino. The card introduced the shadow mechanic, a thematic representation of the Soltari people who exist in a plane between dimensions, unable to interact with those who do not share their ethereal state.

The artwork was provided by Brian Snaddden, who utilized a distinct, stark style to illustrate the monk's shifted reality. Within the lore of the Rath cycle, the Soltari were refugees from the plane of Rath, and the card's design—specifically its protection from non-shadow creatures—was intended to mechanically enforce the narrative of these displaced beings slipping past their enemies unnoticed.
