Where it came from
The Somber Hoverguard was originally introduced as a common artifact creature in the 2003 Mirrodin expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Wizards of the Coast as part of the game's shift into an artifact-heavy block, the card reflects the distinct industrial, metallic aesthetic of the plane of Mirrodin. Its illustration, created by artist Greg Staples, captures the creature's utilitarian and ominous presence within the lore of a world forged from metal.
The card was later included in 'The List,' a rotating selection of reprints curated by Wizards of the Coast to appear in Set Boosters starting in 2020. This inclusion serves to introduce newer players to historical cards from the game’s extensive back catalog. While the card is not a tournament staple, it remains a recognized example of the synergy-focused design philosophy that defined the Mirrodin era, emphasizing the importance of artifact counts for mechanical utility.
