Where it came from
The Somber Hoverguard was originally released in the 2004 Mirrodin expansion, a set centered on a world composed entirely of metal. It was designed to showcase the set's signature 'affinity for artifacts' mechanic, which allowed players to cast artifact-themed spells more cheaply based on the number of artifacts they controlled. The creature reflects the aesthetic of the vedalken race, blending organic forms with sleek, mechanical integration to suit the environment's industrial theme.
For the Modern Masters 2015 reprint, the card was updated with new artwork by Igor Kieryluk. As a component of a set designed to revisit and draft popular mechanics from previous eras, this version served to support the artifact-heavy archetypes available in the limited format. Its inclusion was intended to maintain the mechanical consistency of the environment while providing players with a familiar, utilitarian tool for constructing blue-aligned artifact decks.
