Song of Totentanz

Song of Totentanz was released in 2023 as part of the Wilds of Eldraine expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a sorcery that generates a variable number of 1/1 black Rat tokens based on the mana spent, it serves as both a strategic tool for swarm-based gameplay and a narrative representation of a pied-piper style summoning ritual.

The artwork was commissioned from Randy Gallegos, an illustrator with a long history of contributing to the game. Gallegos sought to capture a sense of eerie, rhythmic movement, focusing on the dark, whimsical aesthetic that defines the Eldraine plane. Upon its debut, the card was received by the player community as a versatile addition to black-aligned decks, particularly noted for its synergy with sacrifice-based mechanics and its effective use of the game's creature-token economy.
