Where it came from
Sorin Markov first appeared as a Planeswalker card in the 2009 Zendikar set, but this specific version was reprinted for the Magic 2012 core set. The character was designed as a vampire lord and ancient progenitor of the Innistrad plane, embodying the gothic horror aesthetic that defines that setting. Wizards of the Coast introduced him to explore the concept of a powerful, morally ambiguous protagonist who views the multiverse through the lens of a long-lived, aristocratic predator.
The artwork for this printing was created by Igor Kieryluk. His approach focuses on the character's cold, calculating nature, utilizing deep shadows and a muted, monochromatic color palette to emphasize Sorin's association with darkness and death. Upon release, the card was notable for its game-changing ability to set a player's life total to ten, which solidified its reputation among players as a high-impact, thematic centerpiece for black-aligned control decks.
