Where it came from
Sorin Markov first appeared as a Planeswalker card in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar, representing the ancient, brooding vampire lord of the Multiverse. This particular Secret Lair iteration, numbered 1698, was released as part of a specialized print-on-demand series designed to highlight specific artistic interpretations of iconic characters. The card features unique, stylized artwork that diverges from standard card treatments, intended to appeal to collectors who value aesthetic variance within the game's long-running lore.
The design of this specific card draws upon the gothic horror aesthetic intrinsic to Sorin's origin on the plane of Innistrad. By re-imagining the character through the lens of the Secret Lair drop series, Wizards of the Coast sought to bridge the gap between traditional competitive card play and high-end collectible art. The reception has been largely driven by the card's visual departure from its original illustrations, solidifying its place as a sought-after piece for players who focus on card aesthetics and thematic deck building.
