Where it came from
Sorin the Mirthless first appeared in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The character, a powerful vampire planeswalker, is a central figure in the gothic-horror lore of the Innistrad plane. This specific card belongs to the Art Series, a collection of oversized, non-playable cards designed to showcase the expanded illustration of the character without the clutter of game mechanics.
The artwork for this piece was rendered by Magali Villeneuve, a celebrated artist within the Magic: The Gathering community. Villeneuve focused on capturing Sorin’s brooding, stoic presence and the aristocratic decay associated with the vampire factions of Innistrad. The design was well-received by fans for its focus on painterly detail and its contribution to the immersive, dark aesthetic of the Crimson Vow expansion.
