Where it came from
Sorin the Mirthless first appeared in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. The character, a powerful vampire planeswalker central to the lore of the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, was designed to emphasize his role as a melancholy manipulator. This specific iteration features artwork by Magali Villeneuve, who employed a somber, high-contrast style that aligns with the character's brooding narrative presence.
The version from the Innistrad: Double Feature set, released in 2022, is a unique stylistic variant of the original card. This special set was designed to celebrate the return to the plane by presenting cards from both Midnight Hunt and Crimson Vow in a distinctive high-contrast, black-and-white art style reminiscent of classic silver-screen horror films. This release was aimed at collectors and fans of the aesthetic, stripping away color to highlight the stark linework and dramatic shading of the character's updated illustration.
