Where it came from
Soul of New Phyrexia was first introduced in the Magic: The Gathering Commander 2014 set, and the version found in Commander 2018 is a functional reprint. The card represents the corrupted, metallic essence of the plane of Mirrodin after its transformation into the mechanical nightmare of New Phyrexia. It was designed to emphasize the theme of resiliency through its graveyard-activated ability, which grants indestructible status to all permanents under a player's control, reflecting the indomitable nature of the Phyrexians.
The artwork for this card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific contributor to the game's aesthetic. Briclot focused on capturing the cold, biomechanical fusion that defines New Phyrexian imagery, utilizing a color palette dominated by polished silvers and dark, oily shadows. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its utility in defensive strategies, becoming a staple in high-mana Commander decks that benefit from long-term board protection.
