Where it came from
Soul of Windgrace was released in 2022 as part of the Dominaria United set, a pivotal expansion that returned Magic: The Gathering to the game's plane of origin to celebrate its 30th anniversary. This specific card represents the character Lord Windgrace, a legendary panther warrior and Planeswalker who sacrificed himself to heal the rift over Urborg during the Phyrexian Invasion. The design honors his legacy as a protector of the land, mechanically incentivizing players to manipulate the graveyard and sacrifice lands for strategic advantage.
The illustrative direction for the Dominaria United promos focuses on cinematic depth and character-centric storytelling. The artwork for this card was crafted to evoke the somber, regal authority of Windgrace, emphasizing his connection to the natural world of Dominaria. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community, particularly among players who favor Jund-aligned strategies, for its versatility and its thematic ties to one of the most beloved figures in the game's lore.
