Lore

Why it matters

This rare card from the promotional set serves as a versatile removal tool, allowing players to exile a target permanent while granting an opponent the chance to cast it later at a higher cost. Its unique ability to delay a threat while taxing the opponent's resources makes it a thoughtful inclusion for those looking to manage the board state with precision.

Card face

What it does

Exile target nonland permanent. For as long as that card remains exiled, its owner may play it. A spell cast by an opponent this way costs 2 generic mana more to cast.

Teferi's body couldn't travel through time far enough, but with Kaya's help, his spirit could.

Provenance

Where it came from

Soul Partition was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was created to evoke the intense, mechanical conflict of the set, which focuses on the war between Urza and Mishra. This specific promotional version serves as a stylized variant, designed to highlight the high-fantasy aesthetic that defines the game's long-running lore.

The art was commissioned to capture the themes of displacement and arcane intervention central to the spell's function. Illustrators for the set were tasked with emphasizing the industrial and magical convergence seen in the game's depiction of the war. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical versatility in competitive formats and its contribution to the set's immersive narrative design.
