Where it came from
Soul Shatter was introduced in the 2020 Zendikar Rising set, specifically appearing as part of the ancillary content included within the release's Commander decks. It serves as a black-aligned removal spell designed for multiplayer formats, forcing each opponent to sacrifice their most powerful creature or planeswalker. This mechanic was crafted to provide black decks with a versatile, scalable answer to threats that might otherwise be protected by hexproof or indestructible keywords.
The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Magali Villeneuve, whose evocative style emphasizes the dramatic, destructive nature of the spell. Villeneuve, a staple contributor to the game’s aesthetic, utilized high-contrast lighting and dark, ethereal tones to convey the sense of a soul being forcibly extracted. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its strategic depth, quickly becoming a staple choice for decks looking to balance defensive utility with aggressive board control.
