Vow of Duty

Vow of Duty was first released in 2011 as part of the inaugural Commander product line, a set of preconstructed decks designed specifically for the rapidly growing multiplayer format. Wizards of the Coast developed these decks to provide a ready-to-play entry point for Commander enthusiasts, introducing cards like this to facilitate political gameplay by preventing enchanted creatures from attacking the controller or their planeswalkers.

The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who utilized a distinct visual language to convey the theme of a magical oath. The design focuses on the mechanics of encouragement and restriction, encouraging players to negotiate table politics rather than simply attacking. Upon release, the Vow cycle was well-received by the player base for its utility in defensive strategies and its ability to influence the flow of combat in games involving multiple opponents.
