Where it came from
Souls of the Lost was released in 2023 as part of the promotion for the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. The card features a unique showcase frame treatment designed to reflect the underground, subterranean themes of the set, specifically focusing on the mysterious, tomb-raiding aesthetic of the Ixalan plane. These promotional versions were distributed primarily through specialized events and set boosters, intended to provide collectors with distinct visual variations of the core game pieces.
The artwork for this card was commissioned to capture the spectral and haunting nature of the lost civilization found within the caverns. Illustrators for the set were tasked with balancing the high-fantasy elements of Magic: The Gathering with the specific Mesoamerican-inspired visual language that defines the Ixalan setting. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its atmospheric aesthetic, which successfully grounded the magical mechanics of the card in the deep, lore-heavy environment of the expansion.
