Where it came from
Souls of the Lost was introduced as part of the promotional set for The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, released by Wizards of the Coast in late 2023. This card variant was designed to highlight the set's central themes of subterranean exploration, ancient civilizations, and the interplay between life and death within the deep cavern systems of the Ixalan plane.
The illustrative work captures the eerie, ethereal aesthetic synonymous with the set’s necromantic elements. Artists collaborating on this series aimed to evoke a sense of forgotten history and lingering spiritual energy, utilizing a distinct visual style that differentiates these promotional printings from the standard set release. The design was received by the player community as a thematic centerpiece that anchors the expansion’s focus on graveyard-centric mechanics.
