Southern Paladin

Southern Paladin was originally released in the 1996 expansion Visions, though the version designated as collector number 46 hails from the Seventh Edition base set released in 2001. This set was a significant milestone for the game, as it marked the transition to a new card frame design intended to improve readability and aesthetic consistency across the growing card pool. The Paladin serves as a classic example of white-aligned defensive mechanics, designed to provide players with a specific tactical counter against black-aligned permanents.

The artwork for the Seventh Edition printing was provided by Greg Staples, whose work contributed to the grit and atmospheric realism that defined much of the game’s aesthetic during this era. The design intent focused on the archetypal high-fantasy knight, reinforcing the color wheel philosophy where white represents order and light standing in direct opposition to corruption. Upon its release, Seventh Edition was generally praised for its curated selection of classic cards, serving as a foundational experience for a generation of players entering the hobby.
