Where it came from
Southern Paladin was released in 1997 as part of the Weatherlight expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Mirage block, Weatherlight was notable for its focus on the game's evolving narrative, centering on the titular skyship and its crew. The card reflects the set's high-fantasy aesthetic and the ongoing conflict between the forces of order and the expansion's primary antagonists.
The card features artwork by Kaja Foglio, a prominent contributor to the game's early visual identity. Her illustration depicts the character in a formal, defensive posture consistent with the mechanical role of the creature, which is designed to punish black permanents. The piece is remembered for its distinct, painterly style that characterized much of the mid-90s Magic art direction, emphasizing grounded character design over the more abstract magical effects seen in later sets.
