Sovereign's Bite

Sovereign's Bite was released in the Core Set 2019 for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to serve as an accessible entry point for new players while providing a narrative focus on the origins of the planeswalker Nicol Bolas. As a black-aligned common card, it serves the mechanical purpose of life drain, a classic hallmark of the color's gameplay identity that allows players to bridge the gap between aggressive early-game pressure and late-game stabilization.

The card features artwork by Clint Cearley, an established illustrator within the Magic: The Gathering franchise known for his detailed character work. The visual design focuses on the thematic elements of vampirism and dark sorcery inherent to the card's effect, emphasizing a sense of predatory grace. Upon its release, the card was widely evaluated by the community as a functional utility tool, frequently appearing in limited formats like Draft and Sealed where life-swing effects are critical for securing victories in tight matches.
