Where it came from
Sovereign Okinec Ahau was released in late 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, a set centered on a subterranean, prehistoric world inspired by Mesoamerican cultures. The card represents a legendary Cat God, serving as a focal point for the set's exploration of Ixalan's hidden depths and the ancient, primal powers residing within its cavernous ecosystem.
The character design was created to embody the set's themes of growth and resilience. Illustrated by artist David Auden Nash, the card features a striking, stylized depiction of Okinec Ahau that emphasizes its status as a divine entity. The card mechanics were received by players as a specialized tool for aggressive, creature-focused strategies, highlighting the design team's goal of rewarding players for building up the strength of their battlefield presence.
