Where it came from
Sparring Regimen was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages promotional set in 2021. The card was designed for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, specifically serving as a key component of the Silverquill college theme, which emphasizes white and black mana, political maneuvering, and strategic reinforcement. The artwork captures the rigorous, academic atmosphere of the Strixhaven institution, illustrating the high-stakes environment where students hone their magical abilities.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, whose work often explores dynamic movement and light within fantasy settings. The design intent was to reflect the synergy-focused gameplay of the set, rewarding players for aggressive creature interaction. Upon release, the promo version became popular among collectors for its distinct aesthetic and its utility in both limited and constructed formats, marking a notable addition to the Strixhaven card pool.
