Where it came from
Blot Out the Sky was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set in 2021, specifically featured as a promotional card. The card represents the high-fantasy academic aesthetic of the Strixhaven university, focusing on the Silverquill college, which emphasizes the interplay between light and shadow. The design reflects the school's theme of words as weaponry, manifested here as a powerful sorcery that creates flying Inkling creature tokens.
The card was illustrated by Campbell White, who utilized a stark, high-contrast style typical of the Silverquill aesthetic to emphasize the encroaching darkness described in the card's flavor text. The promotional variant, identified by its collector number 167s, features the unique 'set' frame treatment consistent with the Strixhaven Mystical Archive style. Upon release, players noted the card for its scalable board-wipe effect, marking it as a significant utility piece within the Commander format of Magic: The Gathering.
