Spawnwrithe was originally released as part of the Modern Masters 2008 set, designed to function within a growing body of Magic: The Gathering creatures that reward players for successfully dealing combat damage. As a green creature, its mechanical design focuses on rapid proliferation, creating token copies of itself whenever it connects with an opponent. This design choice reflects the game's shift toward aggressive creature-based strategies in the late 2000s, aiming to create a 'snowball effect' that forces opponents to manage the board state immediately.

The card’s illustration by Chippy captures a surreal, organic aesthetic consistent with the flavor of the set's setting.
