Rishadan Brigand

Rishadan Brigand was originally released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced the concept of the Rishadan ports and the island city of Rishada, a location characterized by its heavy reliance on taxation and mercantilism, which is reflected in the card's taxing ability. The art was commissioned from illustrator Greg Staples, who rendered the brigand as a menacing, shadowy figure consistent with the set's gritty, seafaring aesthetic.

The card was later included in 'The List', a curated collection of legacy cards that Wizards of the Coast inserts into Set Boosters to introduce players to older mechanics and history. By reissuing cards like the Rishadan Brigand, the company provides a modern frame and acquisition method for cards that defined the environment of late 90s competitive play, allowing players to utilize these classic designs in contemporary game formats.
