Spectacular Skywhale // Spectacular Skywhale

The Spectacular Skywhale card originates from the Secrets of Strixhaven Art Series, a promotional collection released by Wizards of the Coast in 2021. This set was designed to showcase the high-fidelity artwork of cards featured in the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The Art Series cards are unique because they omit the standard game text, focusing entirely on the visual aesthetics of the creatures and locations within the game’s multiverse.

The artwork for the Skywhale was created by the illustrator Jesper Ejsing, known for his dynamic and imaginative fantasy style. Ejsing sought to capture the ethereal, majestic nature of the creature, emphasizing its scale against the backdrop of the magical academy campus. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors who appreciate the game's shift toward high-quality art prints, as the absence of gameplay mechanics allows the viewer to focus on the intricate details of the rendering and the vibrant color palette employed by the artist.
