Provenance

Where it came from

Spectral Gateguards was released in 2012 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Avacyn Restored. The set was designed to conclude the block's narrative arc, centering on the themes of hope and the return of the archangel Avacyn to the plane of Innistrad. As a common-rarity creature, the card serves to reinforce the set's mechanical focus on creatures with the soulbond keyword, which allows two creatures to form a symbiotic pair.

The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who rendered the spirit guardians in a style consistent with the gothic horror aesthetic of the Innistrad setting. The design intent was to depict these entities as spectral wardens tasked with protecting the gates of the sanctuary. Upon its release, the card was received primarily as a functional utility piece for limited formats, appreciated for its ability to bolster defensive play through its paired ability.
