Provenance

Where it came from

Amass the Components was released in May 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the narrative arc of the archangel Avacyn's return to the plane of Innistrad, a gothic horror-inspired setting. As a blue sorcery card, it was designed to provide card advantage by allowing players to draw three cards and subsequently place one from their hand on the bottom of their library, mechanically reinforcing the blue color identity's focus on manipulation and foresight.

The card features artwork by the illustrator Volkan Baga, whose work is highly regarded for its detailed, painterly aesthetic within the game. Baga’s illustration depicts a scholar or mage gathering esoteric relics, capturing the frantic academic pursuit central to the card's function. The design was intended to serve as a staple for limited play environments, balancing the efficiency of drawing multiple cards with a restrictive casting cost to ensure it remained a tactical choice rather than an overpowered utility.
