Where it came from
Spellskite was originally introduced in the 2011 set New Phyrexia, designed to showcase the set's focus on the corrupted, biomechanical aesthetic of the Phyrexians. As a unique artifact creature with the ability to redirect targeted spells or abilities, it became a staple in eternal formats for its high utility and resilience, particularly as a defensive tool in combo decks. Its design, characterized by an eerie, porcelain-like appearance, perfectly encapsulates the Phyrexian ethos of perfection through technological integration.
The 2017 Judge Gift version of the card features updated, alternate art by Igor Kieryluk, who moved away from the original's frantic mechanical sprawl toward a more focused, imposing portrait. These promotional cards were distributed exclusively to Level 2 and higher Magic: The Gathering judges as a reward for their contributions to the organized play community. This version is highly prized by collectors for its distinct aesthetic shift and its status as a limited-run prestige printing of a historically significant competitive card.
