Where it came from
Sphere of Safety was released in 2012 as part of the Return to Ravnica expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a rare enchantment, the card reflects the mechanics and flavor of the Selesnya Conclave, one of the ten guilds featured on the plane of Ravnica. Its design emphasizes the guild's focus on collective strength and protection, forcing opponents to pay mana for each enchantment on the battlefield to attack the controller.
The card features artwork by Terese Nielsen, a prominent illustrator in the early history of Magic: The Gathering. Her contribution captures the ethereal, protective essence of the Selesnya guild’s magic through light-filled imagery and naturalistic aesthetics. Upon its debut, the card was widely received by the player base as a powerful defensive staple in Commander and other casual formats, solidifying its place in enchantment-themed decks.
