Where it came from
Sphere of Safety was introduced in the Commander 2016 set as part of the 'Open Hostility' preconstructed deck. Designed for the multiplayer Commander format, the card was created to serve as a powerful defensive staple for enchantment-themed strategies, forcing opponents to pay a mana tax for each enchantment controlled by the player to attack them.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, who utilized a bright, protective aesthetic to convey the card's mechanical function as a magical barrier. It has since become a cornerstone for political or 'pillow-fort' deck archetypes within the Magic: The Gathering community, valued for its ability to drastically shift the flow of combat in games involving multiple players.
