Where it came from
The Sphinx token from the Journey into Nyx expansion was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2014. It was designed to support the set's mechanics, specifically appearing as a creature generated by cards like Prognostic Sphinx or other effects that create blue Sphinx creature tokens. These tokens were included in booster packs to provide players with a physical representation of their board state during games of Magic: The Gathering.
The artwork was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, a long-time contributor to the game. Velinov's depiction emphasizes the classic, enigmatic nature of the Sphinx, utilizing the high-fantasy aesthetic common to the Theros block, which drew heavy inspiration from Greek mythology. The token was well-received by the player base for its clean design and its ability to clearly convey the power and toughness statistics essential for tracking gameplay.
