Where it came from
Sphinx of Foresight was released in early 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance set, a continuation of the return to the fan-favorite plane of Ravnica in the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card represents the Azorius Senate, one of the primary factions within the city-world, and was designed to reflect the guild's focus on law, structure, and tactical foresight during the unfolding conflict of the War of the Spark storyline.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a ethereal, intellectual aesthetic to capture the Sphinx's role as an advisor and seer. By allowing players to manipulate the top of their library at the start of the game, the design effectively communicates the thematic concept of divination. It was received by the competitive community as a potent utility creature, frequently utilized in control-oriented decks for its ability to smooth out early game draws and provide a resilient threat.
