Where it came from
The Sphinx of Forgotten Lore was released as part of the Foundations Promos set for Magic: The Gathering. These promotional cards are designed to serve as accessible entry points for new players, featuring art and mechanics that highlight the high-fantasy core identity of the game. The set functions as a foundational pillar, ensuring that essential card archetypes remain available in the modern card pool for both casual and competitive play.
The design of this Sphinx continues the long-standing tradition of representing the creature as a guardian of ancient wisdom within the game's lore. The illustration focuses on a regal, imposing figure set against an architectural backdrop, emphasizing the 'forgotten' aspect of its name. By utilizing a clean, readable layout typical of modern promotional releases, the design aims to strike a balance between visual grandeur for collectors and clarity for those learning the complexities of the game's mechanics.
