Where it came from
Sphinx of New Prahv was released in early 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the Azorius Senate, one of the ten iconic guilds on the plane of Ravnica, tasked with maintaining law and order through bureaucratic and magical means. It was designed as a rare creature that highlights the guild's signature mechanic, detain, which temporarily restricts an opponent's ability to utilize their permanent cards.
The card’s visual design is the work of artist Johannes Voss, who utilized the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Azorius aesthetic—characterized by clean lines, white and blue motifs, and grand architecture. As a creature with both flying and vigilance, the Sphinx reflects the guild's defensive nature. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its solid performance in limited formats, serving as a reliable stabilizing piece that embodied the flavor of the law-keeping faction.
