Where it came from
Sphinx of the Final Word was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch set, a key expansion in the Magic: The Gathering Battle for Zendikar block. This particular version, numbered 63s, was issued as a promotional card, typically distributed through store-level events or programs. The card was designed to be a high-impact, late-game threat for blue control decks, embodying the imposing nature of the sphinxes in the Zendikar setting.
The artwork was created by Chase Stone, who captured the creature's immense scale and stoic, inscrutable presence. The design centers on the card's mechanical resilience—specifically its hexproof and uncounterable abilities—which were intended to provide a stable win condition that ignores the typical defensive tools of opponents. Upon its release, it was widely praised by players for its balance of power and flavor, becoming a staple in competitive formats that favored deliberate, long-term strategic play.
