Where it came from
Oath of Nissa was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a thematic centerpiece for the game's shift toward the 'Gatewatch' narrative, representing the green-aligned planeswalker Nissa Revane's commitment to protecting the multiverse. Its inclusion in the promo series, featuring unique artwork by Wesley Burt, was intended to highlight the emotional weight of the character's choice during the Zendikar story arc.
The design of the card focuses on utility and flavor, allowing players to manipulate the top of their library, which mechanically mirrors Nissa's connection to the land and her ability to tap into mana sources. Wesley Burt’s illustration emphasizes Nissa’s ethereal bond with nature, utilizing a distinct color palette that aligns with her color identity. Upon its release, the card saw immediate competitive play across multiple formats, earning praise for its versatility and its ability to smooth out the early turns of a match while grounding the player in the game's evolving lore.
