Where it came from
Sphinx of the Steel Wind originally debuted in the 2005 Magic: The Gathering set Shards of Alara, serving as a powerful centerpiece for the Esper shard. This creature was designed to embody the intersection of white, blue, and black mana, utilizing the 'artifact-matters' theme that defined the plane of Esper. It was crafted by Wizards of the Coast design teams to provide a resilient, high-impact threat that could swing the momentum of a game through its combination of protection from colors and lifelink, alongside vigilance and flying.
The version appearing in Mystery Booster 2, numbered 89, features the classic illustration by Greg Staples. Staples, known for his atmospheric and textured approach to fantasy art, rendered the sphinx with a cold, metallic aesthetic that reflects the Esper obsession with perfection through artifice. This reprint in the Mystery Booster series was intended to provide players with a functional copy of the iconic creature while maintaining the visual legacy of the original printing, which remains highly regarded for its imposing and stoic depiction of the sphinx.
