Sphinx of the Steel Wind

Sphinx of the Steel Wind was originally introduced in the Shards of Alara set in 2008, representing the intersection of white, blue, and black mana within the plane of Esper. The creature embodies the Esper philosophy of merging biological life with etherium, a magical metal, resulting in a formidable engine of combat that combines flying, vigilance, lifelink, and protection from red and green. Its inclusion in the Commander 2013 product line offered players a reprint of this powerful archetype, maintaining its status as a high-cost but high-impact centerpiece for multicolored strategy decks.

The card’s striking visual identity was crafted by veteran Magic: The Gathering illustrator Kev Walker. Known for his atmospheric and often menacing depictions of fantasy creatures, Walker chose to emphasize the mechanical, razor-sharp nature of the Sphinx.
