Spike Weaver originally appeared in the 1998 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Exodus, the final chapter of the Rath Cycle. Designed during a period of mechanical experimentation within the game, the card was crafted to reward players for managing their life totals as a resource, reflecting the high-risk, high-reward playstyle characteristic of green-aligned cards in the late 1990s. Its art, provided by illustrator Donato Giancola, depicts the creature with a visceral, organic aesthetic that became a hallmark of the set's visual identity.

The card was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into modern Set Boosters beginning in 2020. This inclusion was intended to introduce classic, out-of-print cards to a new generation of players while maintaining their original artistic legacy.
