Provenance

Where it came from

Spike Weaver was originally released as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game in 1998. The set concluded the Rath Cycle storyline, focusing on the dark, mechanical plane of Rath. As a green creature card, it reflected the game's evolving mechanics regarding damage prevention and defensive utility, offering players a way to neutralize combat-heavy strategies through its active ability.

The card’s artwork was provided by illustrator Mike Raabe, whose work frequently appeared in Magic sets throughout the late 1990s. His rendering of the creature captures the organic, prickly aesthetic characteristic of the 'Spike' creature type, designed to visually reinforce the card's defensive function. The card was later included in The List, a curated selection of reprints integrated into set boosters, which served to increase the accessibility of older, out-of-print cards for modern players.
