Spike Weaver

Spike Weaver was originally released in the Stronghold expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, a set designed to flesh out the game's creature-heavy mechanics. The card features artwork by Mike Raabe, whose illustrative style during this era helped define the organic and sometimes grotesque aesthetic of the game's creatures. Mechanically, the card was prized for its utility in defensive play, as its ability to prevent combat damage provided a significant stalling tactic against aggressive opponents.

The 1998 World Championship Decks were released by Wizards of the Coast to allow players to pilot exact card-for-card replicas of the decks used by the top eight finalists at the 1998 World Championships. These decks were printed with a distinct gold border and specific back card design, serving as an educational tool for the community to analyze high-level tournament strategy. Because they are not legal for standard tournament play, they are highly regarded by collectors as historical snapshots of the competitive meta during the late nineties.
